Well, anyway let’s get on with our job. We are going to use a wizard, we are going to use a automated assistant to will help us build our first site, so the easiest way to find it, I am gonna go from the, getting start tab you can also go up here to the site menu, and hit new site. That will let you build the site. I am gonna go here to Dreamweaver site under create new, it brings exactly the same wizard so let’s click there. And, the first question asked about the site Dreamweaver thousand folders corresponds with the files and folders on server, that’s good. What would you like to name your site now? What would you like to name your site has nothing to do with the URL, with the .com name which you have registered with your register. It’s Go daddy or network solutions.
Ahmm, basically, this is just a name that your site will be called, there also going to be the directory name, when we try to find a place to put the files that we are working on. So, let’s call it a Dreamweaver tutorial okay. Next, now this is the URL that you registered with Go daddy or network solutions of Dreamweaver. I have my site, my own internal web server and we are going to connect amm, since I have already got select the DNS we are going to connect a site called www.dreamweavertutorial.com. Now, this would be what we put here would be your mygreatidea.com or computermystuff.com.
Well, because I have registered, because I have set up my DNS, I don’t have to register it. Here if you want this to make available to everybody on the internet, you are going to need to register it. So, anyway ones you have this two boxes filled, click next. Okay, the question is asked do you want to designate the server technology at this time.
And, essentially we are going to leave this all alone, we don’t want to designate the server technology at this time because currently we are building a static HTML page, we are not using php or ASP or JSP or Asp.net or whatever you know. We are building a static HTML page, no database connection or anything. So, we select no. if you select yes, it will let you pick what server technology would you use and then it will set up this tubs on the HTML documents or ASP documents or whatever current documents build so that it will make easier for using. But first no we don’t want the server technology this time and we want next. Okay, what development process we what to use.
It will local copies on the machine, and then upload to the server or take it directly on the server using local network. We are going to edit local copies on the machine and then upload those copies to the server already. That’s the, methodology Dreamweaver prefers, otherwise you have to build the local share that connects to your web server and then basically just using the web server you have two copies of your files. Anyway, where are your computer, this is the local computer, do you wanna store your files. The default that Dreamweaver builds is the directory inside of my documents, it creates a folder called my webs and inside that folder creates another folder with a name, which you name your slide. So, let’s go with the default my documents, my webs, Dreamweaver tutorial, and click next.
How to we wish to connect to the local server, to the remote server we are going to connect to the FTP. Now you know the changes here’s a possibility of going local network that means we create share, RDS, visual source if you have that installed. Mostly most people I have worked with use local network or they use FTP, so we are gonna with FTP, host name. My internal FTP server is mysoftware.com. Now the folder that I am going to store the same is the name folder. So, I am going to land here, if you have a set a posting with some remote server some other company like Godaddy they will give you the file name associated with your domain they allow will you space on the web server for anything. They give you a specific file name to store your website in, that’s the second block, apart from the third block that’s we are going to put it. So, since I don’t have that I am going to just put in blank that means it is going to in the main directory.
FTP login is the name that I use to login, I am going to say administrator, now you will not use administrator kept login to your FTP server. Any open FTP server should never ever ever have administrative login active. But this case, it’s a turn on, hang to it, we use the administrator. FTP password you want to enter and then you wanna make sure it is saved is checked, if you don’t you will be entering your FTP password every time you turn around. Ahhh if that it says you secure FTP you will not need to check that box, if you do one there was a not you need to check it, you would know. If you are gonna use the security server you would know if you were using that someone would have told you already. The test correction button allows you to see you have put everything in right. if Dreamweaver says yes you’ve connected your web server successfully.
Okay, everything good here, so let’s put next. Unable check in and checkout, if you are a part of large development team check in and checkout is a good thing. That means that you can take a file, any media HTML document etc., check it out, work on it as long as you want. No one else can get a copy of that file to work on as long as you haven’t checked out. Dreamweaver secures that file, it won’t let it go out, it will keep it locked still you check it back in and someone else can check it out. It keeps your team members from accidentally or purpose overriding your work. So, for large group, check in, checkout is kind of handy. If you by your self, checking a file is very annoying, you have to do it every time you get a file. You have to check it out; when you bring it back, you have to check back in. when you are working by your self what’s the point, it’s just the extra work. So, we are gonna say no do not unable check in and check out.
And the next, this is the some of the information that we let in, check through it. Check, sure that everything is out and then click done. Dreamweaver at this point is going to bill our website on a local machine, here it is and it’s going to also, make sure we have our FTP connection. Now, you don’t disappear, where the, where my cursor is. In the list of sites, we have the Dreamweaver tutorial, I have just created it. There it is, we are looking at the local view, here it is. And, inside that, we already have a default page, which I have taken the liberty of creating. Ahmm, the button here you notice connects to the remote host. This is the button that turns your FTP connection on don’t forget, click it. There’s the green line here, it connects to the FTP server. We are currently connected to the remote server, now if you click remote up here, you see lot of files. All these files are on my internal FTP server that we are connected to.
Just to show you the connections live, I will go back to local view, if you choose to edit this file, I am gonna go here and get it. To open any file in this list, double click on it. This is the easy way to drag and drop view. I am gonna go here and enter some text, want to save that text. Now if I wish to put this file onto the remote server, what I do is click power management, put and if I click put this file will be upload to remote server. I will be able to see it from the internet at large and since it’s named default, it will the file that my website shows up first to everybody whenever some one goes to me. Anyway that’s the how you do it , that’s how you set up a simple website for a static HTML site at Dreamweaver.
Ahmm, that’s all we have time for today, thank you very much for putting up with me. This is my first tutorial, it would sound a bit lame, if you would please offer feedback and rate the tutorial, ahmm there will be many more hopefully coming up with new feature. We are going to do CSS tutorial and ASP.net tutorial. Basically, anything that you would do on a web server, I planned to build a tutorial for that so, ones again thank you, make sure you rate my tutorial, but please be kind it’s my first one.
