So let’s go ahead and run this. And you can also see very quickly it comes back with some results. And it’s showing here broken links which are links to files not found on my local disc.

It’s telling me that the file Kettles and Teapots.HTML has a broken link. It’s linking to a file called ‘Our products.HTM.’ But actually there isn’t a file called ‘our products.HTM’. So I’m going to double click that to check this out and there’s the file and you can see ‘our products’ is in fact linking to ‘our products.HTM’ that’s actually not going anywhere.

We are already in the products area here so instead of creating a page called ‘our products’ I’m just gonna put a nowhere link in here, a no link or a hash mark and that will satisfy Dreamweaver because now it’s actually not trying to link to a page because I’m already on the product page here and I don’t need to click on that products page to go to the same page that I’m on. Same thing for ‘Teacloudteas.com’, it’s trying to link to the same non-existent ‘our products’ page.

Let’s open that up and then again I’m just going to come down to the link area, type in a palent sign and we can save these pages. Now if we didn’t want to create an ‘our products’ page I could have created those and created the links properly to fix this problem as well. Now let’s run that report again. And you can see now you have no broken links. If I click this menu I can also check for things like ‘Orphaned files’, you can see here’s the ‘Image brewing tea.jpeg’ that’s not being used at all on my site. This page called ‘Contact us’ is not linked up yet and then we have a file called ‘events.HTML’ sitting right here.

If I open up it’s just a blank page with the title of ‘Tea cloud Events’. So this just will either alert me to the fact that I don’t need these pages or remind me that I need to create these pages and link them up to the rest of the site. So Dreamweaver will find the ‘orphaned files’ what I do with them is up to me and how I want to use these pages. And the last thing that shows is ‘external links’ and this will show you all the external websites you’re linked to and you can see most of these here are just lynda.com links. Because the lynda.com link appears at the bottom of each one of our pages. You can see that right here at the side credits.

This is just a good way to see a list of all the external sites you’re linking to. So that’s how we run check links site wide again another very useful tool to run before you publish your site to the web. Because you want to make sure that when you go to publish your site you don’t want to have any unnecessary orphaned files among there, especially if you’re limited for web space and you definitely don’t want to have any broken links.

So be sure to run that report before you publish your site.

In case you didn’t see the video in part 1 of this series… here it is again.
